If You Are Home With Frozen Locks
- Heat the Key: Grab a lighter and use it to heat up your key. Once your key is warm, stick it in the lock. If your lock is extremely frozen, you might have to heat up your key a few times. However, the lighter trick should work every time.
- Use a Hair Dryer
- Lock De-Icer: Stock up on a few cans of de-icer during the winter months for situations like this. Spraying de-icer directly into the lock will quickly melt any ice around it.
Don’t try to chip away any ice covering the lock because you could damage the lock in the process, leaving you with one more problem to solve.
A Tip for Frozen Doors
You can prevent your door from freezing shut by spraying the door frame with spray cooking lubricant like Pam. You can also try an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to open a frozen lock. Hand sanitizers work because the alcohol in them melts the ice that has made the lock seize up. Simply pour it on the key and wiggle the key in and out of the lock to loosen it up.
